Glucosamine, a sugar protein that helps build cartilage (the hard connective tissue located mainly on the bones near joints) is a naturally occurring substance found in bones, bone marrow, shellfish and fungus. This natural compound also helps build tendons, ligaments, cartilage, and the fluid that surrounds joints.
Glucosamine was first discovered in 1876 by Georg Ledderhose, a German surgeon, professor, and pioneering traumatologist. The stereochemistry of glucosamine was fully determined in 1939 by Walter Haworth, a British chemist best known for his work on vitamin C and winner of the 1937 Nobel Prize in chemistry.
